Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Terumo, a Japanese multinational producer of medical materials and consumables, has announced plans to cease its production of catheters in Belgium, making 115 employees redundant.
This means that one production division within the facility in Haasrode will be closed. According to the Christian trade union ACV, the production of catheters would then move to Vietnam and Japan. The company management states that the measure was taken to reinforce the competitive position of the company in the long run. Employees of the company are surprised by the changes, as the company has been productive and free from financial problems.
The company already carried out a large-scale restructuring in 2014 Terumo-2014-BE.
