Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Swedish online book retailer Adlibris has initiated cooperation negotiations with the intention to dismiss 130 out of its 194 permanent employees at its warehouse in Morgongåva, Sweden. The reduction of staff is a result of a large scale investment in automation. The automated storage should be running in the end of Q1 or beginning of Q2 of 2025.
This decision has sparked worries about potential unemployment and depopulation in the small town of Morgongåva, which has about 1,500 residents. Adlibris asserts that their investments in automation will yield long-term advantages and could draw new e-commerce businesses to the region, potentially generating new employment opportunities.
Adlibris is the largest online book retailer in the Nordics. In 2023, the company had approximately 350 employees in Sweden.
