Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Nosoli group, owner of the Furet du Nord chain, is considering a job protection plan (PSE) which could lead to the loss of 80 jobs, half in shops and half in support functions. The group plans to close 5 shops in Roubaix and Villeneuve d'Ascq (Nor), Annemasse (Haute-Savoie), Grenoble (Isère) and Bezons (Val-d'Oise). The group justifies this decision by the fragility of the book market and the vital need for reorganisation. The group hopes to negotiate with landlords to keep some shops open. Despite these difficulties, plans to open a shop in Tourcoing have not been abandoned. The Nosoli group is set to increase its workforce from 650 to 600 as a result of parallel job creations. To explain its decision, management points to the explosion in costs weighing on the bookshop, in particular increases in shop rents.
