Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The state-owned railway company VR has initiated change negotiations in its’ subsidiary Avecra, which runs restaurant services on railway stations at eight locations. The negotiations cover 92 of Avecra’s employees at eight restaurants across four cities: Helsinki, Vantaa, Kerava & Tampere. The planned reductions are estimated to amount to 75 employees.
The job cuts are part of VRs plan to streamline operations and focus on railway passenger and freight transport as part of the company’s strategy to prepare for competition in railway services.
Employment effects are expected to take place at the end of the year 2024.
The subsidiary Avecra employs a total of 400 persons in Finland, whereas VR has approximately 6,000 employees in Finland.
Update 22/10/24 Finnish state-owned rail and logistics company VR Group will start shutting down its station restaurant operations in December 2024. All eight brick-and-mortar restaurants managed by VR's subsidiary Avecra in Helsinki, Tampere, Kerava and Vantaa will be closed by the end of September 2025. Closures of some of the restaurants take place by the end of the year of 2024. A total of 72 Avecra employees will be made redundant as the restaurants close.
