Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The telecommunications company Telia has initiated negotiations for the lay-off of 1,400 employees in Sweden which is around 16 per cent of its Swedish workforce. Cooperation negotiations have been undertaken.
The company has not yet specified which functions will be affected by the redundancies or which parts of the country. However, around 300 are consultants according to the white-collar trade union Unionen. The company has made 455 people redundant so far this year. The purpose of the notice is to achieve savings of SEK 2.6 billion per year. The decision is criticised by unions, with some expressing frustration, noting that Telia continues to make significant profits.
Telia operates in the Nordic and Baltic countries, and prior to the downsizing, Telia has 19,730 employees, of which 8,500 are in Sweden.
Three similar recent restructuring events at Telia have been done in Finland Telia-2023-FI, Sweden Telia-2023-SE, and Estonia Telia-2024-EE.
The current worldwide restructuring programme of Telia has been recorded in the ERM events database Telia-2024-WO.
