Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mariborska livarna Maribor (MLM), a company that produces die-casting tools, aluminum die-casting, and machined parts for the automotive industry, has entered bankruptcy proceedings, leading to the termination of 350 jobs.
Over the past three years, the company has suffered losses of over €10 million. Slovenian Sovereign Holding (SDH), the sole owner of MLM, has stated that the company's attempts to restructure and improve cost efficiency have failed. The proposed measures would have required additional financial resources besides the restructuring of the loans. However, further state aid would be considered unauthorized under European rules. Some potential buyers have also asked for a write-off of state claims, which, according to SDH, would also be unlawful state aid.
