European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that it will cut around 30,000 full-time jobs in Germany.
The reason for the job cuts is a loss of €1.2 billion in the first half of 2024. According to Deutsche Bahn, negative external factors in particular led to the poor result. Strikes, extreme weather, construction sites and weakening demand had significantly worsened the company's results compared to the previous year, the company announced. As a consequence, around 30,000 full-time jobs are to be cut over the next five years. Jobs are to be cut in administration in particular, with around 1,500 redundancies already planned this year. Exactly where and how the jobs will be cut is not known at this time.
While administrative jobs are being cut, jobs have already been created this year in other areas such as vehicle maintenance, for example 116 jobs in Hannover Deutsche Bahn-2024-DE and 1,200 jobs in Cottbus Deutsche Bahn-2024-DE.
Deutsche Bahn is the largest railway company in Germany and currently employs over 211,000 people in Germany.
