Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Railway operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is cutting 500 jobs at its headquarters in Utrecht as part of a new savings programme aimed at saving €200 million annually.
The reorganisation will occur through natural attrition, without forced layoffs. This measure is necessary, according to the company, as NS continues to incur losses in 2024, similar to previous years, due to the persistent trend of remote working which pressures revenue. The core task of NS, operating trains in the Netherlands, remains unprofitable.
Most of the 20,000 NS employees work on trains or at stations, where no reorganisation is planned. Last year, NS hired a thousand new conductors and drivers.
