Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German food manufacturer Stute has announced 206 job cuts at its site in Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to the company, the reasons for the job cuts are insufficient orders and the subsequent under-utilisation of the production site. Only a strategic investor with production capacity utilisation would have made it possible to continue operations in an economically responsible manner, according to Stute. Such an investor could not be found.
Business operations are to be discontinued on the 1st of August 2024. In order to mitigate the social consequences for the employees affected, the 206 employees are to be transferred to a transfer company. This measure is intended to support the workforce in their professional reorientation and facilitate the transition to new employment in the primary labour market.
