Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Amazon, a multinational technology company with a focus on e-commerce, has announced the creation of 1,000 jobs at its newly built logistics centre in Dummerstorf (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).
The logistics centre is due to start operations in autumn 2024. Around 450 people are to be hired for the partial operation this year, with a further 550 to be hired next year. When fully operational, around 1,000 people will then work at the site.
Unlike the dispatch centres in Rostock and Neubrandenburg, no goods will be sent directly to customers from Dummerstorf. The new logistics centre will be used to store goods, assemble and pack orders.
Amazon assumes that the company will have 40,000 permanent employees in Germany by the end of the year. The employees currently work in 21 logistics centres, 10 sorting centres and more than 60 distribution centres. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Amazon currently has distribution centres in Neubrandenburg and Rostock.
