Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Foodora, based in Austria, is an online food delivery service. The company plans to cut 128 jobs and close its seven "foodora markets" in Vienna, Linz, and Graz, while outsourcing customer service. Bicycle couriers are not affected.
On May 27, 2024, Foodora reported to the AMS that 128 employees would undergo "mutual termination." CEO Herbert Haas expressed gratitude for their service, noting support packages and assistance for affected staff. Foodora is shifting focus to partnerships with grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retailers, closing its markets over the coming weeks.
Foodora Austria GmbH had 410 employees in 2022, with losses of €16.4 million. The 3,000 delivery riders remain unaffected.
