Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Onsemi, a US-based multinational microchip producer has announced it will consolidate its facilities in Belgium which will lead to the dismissal of 106 employees in total. Concretely this involves the facilities in both Mechelen and Oudenaarde, whereby all further operations will take place in Belgium. The consolidation plans have the intention to reduce costs, increase efficiency as well as profitability. In addition to the redundancies, 63 workers will be offered to move from Oudenaarde to Mechelen.
The company has initiated the necessary information and consultation rounds as required, it states that it will try to support the affected employees as much as possibly in the process.
