Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Fedex, an international logistics and courier service, has announced it will dismiss 350 employees at its facility in Zaventem.
The restructuring is part of a larger scale operation across Europe, which will lead to the dismissal of approximately 1700-2000 people. Most of the dismissals will take place among support services in back-office and commercial functions. Employees that are involved in handling shipments are not expected to be affected by the restructuring.
Trade unions state that they not plan to organise actions themselves but will support them if employees would be willing to organise.
A previous restructuring event of Fedex in Belgium has been recorded in the ERM events database and can be found here Fedex-2021-BE. The ongoing European wide restructuring event of Fedex has also been recorded in the database FedEx-2024-EU.
