Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German home appliance manufacturer Miele has announced that it plans to cut about 2,000 jobs worldwide. The background of the job cuts is a global efficiency programme called the ‘Miele Performance Programme’.
So far, the company has announced that the layoffs will affect about 1,300 jobs in Germany. About 600 jobs are expected to be cut, while up to 700 jobs will be transferred to the company’s site in Poland. The sources also report that Miele has signed a new collective agreement with the local trade unions. The restructuring programme is due to a decline in demand after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miele has been operating since 1899. Currently, the company has 15 production sites and employs 22,700 people worldwide. The restructuring programme in Germany and the resulting job creation in Poland have been recorded in the ERM events database under Miele-2024-DEa, Miele-2024-PL, and Miele-2024-DEb .
