Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Homanit Lietuva, a German company, which was granted the status of a major investment project in Lithuania in 2018, is building a fibreboard plant in Pagiriai, Vilnius district. More than €220 million have already been invested in the plant by the end of 2023. ‘Homanit Lietuva’ planned to start up the plant at full capacity initially in 2022 and then at the end of 2023. The start of operations has now been postponed to autumn 2024. ‘Homanit Lietuva’ currently employs approx. 140 specialists, which is expected to increase up to 400 once production starts. The company is currently inviting "courageous, motivated and willing to learn professionals" to join the ‘Homanit Lietuva’ team. No specific requirements are given for the prospective employees. The start-up of the plant in Lithuania has been delayed due to resistance from the local community. The local community's opposition was due to the fact that the site of the plant falls within the protection zone of the Pagiriai groundwater aquifer.
