UPM, a Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer headquartered in Helsinki, has announced the loss of 210 jobs at its Dörpen site in Lower Saxony.
UPM Communication Papers has announced the closure of a fine paper machine at Nordland Papier (PM 3) in Dörpen. The measures would result in a reduction of the annual capacity of 280,000 tonnes of uncoated fine papers in UPM's portfolio.
The reason given for the job cuts is the decline in demand for graphic papers in recent years. The number of jobs affected in Dörpen is estimated at around 210. The participation procedure with the works council will be initiated immediately in accordance with local legislation. With the planned closure, the production of graphic papers is to be discontinued by the end of 2024 at the latest.
In March 2023, UPM had already announced the closure of a machine in Schongau, Bavaria, which led to the loss of 135 jobs UPM-DE-2023, and in July 2023, UPM announced the permanent closure of its plant in Plattling, Bavaria, which led to the loss of 135 jobs UPM 2023-DE. This case is also closely linked to the closure of UPM's newsprint mill in Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia.
UPM employs 16,600 people worldwide and has a turnover of €10.5 billion.
