Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Europe’s largest software company SAP has announced that it will cut 8,000 jobs worldwide by the end of March 2025.
The restructuring has been announced in Germany, where about 2,600 positions are expected to be cut. According to the agreement concluded with employee representatives, the voluntary leave programme is aimed at employees over 55 years of age. Additionally, the European Works Council has informed that the cuts will affect about 4,100 positions at the SAP’s European sites, but no information on other locations is available as of now.
The restructuring programme aims to transform the company’s operational setup to capture organisational synergies and AI-driven efficiencies. SAP employs more than 105,000 people globally.
The previous restructuring events of SAP were recorded in the ERM events databaseSAP-2023-WO and SAP-2019-WO.
UPDATE 22/07/2024
It has been announced that SAP is set to expand its restructuring programme due to the willingness of many employees to accept redundancy. The layoffs will affect between 9,000 and 10,000 jobs, instead of the 8,000 previously announced.
