Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
ExxonMobil Chemical in France has announced the definitive shutdown of its plastics production line and 647 people will lose their jobs at their site at Port-Jérôme-sur-Seine (Seine-Maritime) and 30 at the group's head office at Nanterre (Haut-de-Seine).
In a press release, ExxonMobil Chemical France said it was "definitively shutting down the steam cracker, polyethylene, polypropylene and adhesives units and the associated logistics facilities". This represents 70% of the site's chemical activities. The company plans to dismantle the facilities concerned and begin environmental remediation. ExxonMobil has announced that the first departures will not take place directly this year, but in 2025. Individual and collective solutions will be sought after consultation with employee representatives.
The reason for the closure is poor economic results: the company is said to have lost €500 million since 2018. A previous restructuring has already had place in the ExxonMobil facilities in 2021 (ExxonMobil 2021 - FR confirming the economic struggles that the group is facing.
Update, 21/08/2024:
With regard to the redundancy plan, the four trade unions at ExxonMobil in Port-Jérôme announced on Tuesday that they were refusing to sign the PSE negotiated since April. Management had set a date of 6 August for staff representatives to vote on the redundancy plan, which provides for the loss of 647 jobs locally.
Update, 20/09/2024:
After four months of negotiations, the number of jobs cut has been adjusted to 608, as opposed to 677 when the redundancy plan was first announced.
