Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Lidl Lietuva, a fast-growing supermarket chain, is preparing for an opening of its new logistics centre in Vilnius, near Lentvaris, which will create more than 200 new jobs. The company invites applications for the vacant positions of order pickers. The company announced the construction of the new logistics centre at the end of 2022, and in early 2023, the company announced that it had started looking for employees for the centre, which will open in 2024. In mid-April, 2024 it was reported that the company had already completed the main team for the new logistics centre, but is still looking for staff members to fill the position of order pickers. A total of around 200 new employees are expected to start work when the new centre opens. Lidl offers a gross salary of between €1,510 and €1,665 for the position of order picker. The company also has an incentive programme that offers the opportunity to earn extra money: in addition to the basic salary, employees who achieve their targets receive monthly bonuses. According to the company, both experienced and non-experienced candidates can apply for the positions of order pickers. The company provides theoretical and practical training for about 1 month for all candidates. According to the company's representatives, LIDL Lietuva offers the highest average salary in the retail sector in Lithuania. In addition, the company also takes care of its employees' financial stability and well-being. Every month, LIDL Lietuva employees receive gift cards, private health insurance, free flu vaccinations (also for their children up to 14 years old), psychological counselling, etc.
