Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Skåne University Hospital, a hospital in southern Sweden with specialized care, research and education, needs to reduce their labour costs with SEK 470 million (€ 40.9 million). The reduction equals 640 fulltime employees, which is about 5% of the total number of employees at the hospital. This was announced by the hospital board on March 20th 2024. The cause for the labour reductions is that Skåne University Hospital finds themselves in a difficult financial situation, where the hospitals deficit rose to about SEK 1.9 billion (€ 165 million) in 2023.
As a result of the decision, all operations and departments within the hospital need to revise their staffing. The staff reductions will mainly take place through natural replacement, through resignations and retirements.
Skåne University Hospital is Sweden's third largest hospital, where about 12,000 employees belonging to more than 100 different professions and occupations work.
