Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Backer OBR, a Swedish manufacturer of heating elements, has announced redundancies at its Stargard plant. 90 of the 289 employees (30% of the workforce) will lose their jobs. Information about the planned collective redundancies was received by the District Labour Office. The decision is explained by the company's worsening economic situation, linked to a drop in revenue with fixed costs remaining at the same level. The redundancies started at the beginning of March and the notice period depends on the employee's seniority. Production workers in particular will lose their jobs, as well as administrative staff. Backer OBR was founded in 1991 and manufactures tubular heaters. In Poland, it has plants in Pyrzyce, Stargard and Warnice.
