Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Nokia, a Finnish telecommunications company will proceed to a collective redundancy of up to 142 workers in Portugal. The redifinition of the company costs is the main reason pointed out.
According to the Nokia spokesperson, the collective dismissal is in line with all regulatory and legal requirements and the company is committed to supporting all workers affected.
At the meantime the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations (Direção-Geral do Emprego e Relações de Trabalho - DGERT) is waiting for the constitution of the Representative Committee of the workers covered by the collective dismissal to schedule the first meeting of the information and negotiation phase.
In paralell, DGERT stated that the "it is liaising with the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional - IEFP) to monitor the workers involved in the collective redundancy".
