Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The UK-based media and entertainment company Sky has announced that it will cut 1,000 jobs worldwide in 2024.
The company plans to cut 1,000 jobs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which represents about 4% of its workforce in these countries. The cuts are expected to hit the company’s engineering teams who are tasked with installing satellite dishes. The conditions of the programme will be negotiated with employee representatives according to local regulations.
The restructuring programme is related to a shift from satellite to digital service provision. As the source reports, a review into the company's business structure revealed a decreased requirement for satellite specialists as more customers transition to digital-only services.
Owned by Comcast, Sky is Europe’s largest media company, employing about 25,000 staff in the UK and Ireland.
