Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Glovo, the Spanish home delivery platform, is planning to cut 100 jobs in the supermarket product delivery division, Super Glovo. The move will affect around 10% of the total team working in this activity. According to sources of the company, the dismissals will take place in the six centres of Granada, Alicante, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Pamplona and Bilbao, where the service will cease to be operational in all these cities. Meanwhile, the company has ensured that the service remains available in other locations (Palma, Malaga, Seville, Valencia, Zaragoza, Madrid and Barcelona).
The company justifies the decision by a fall in demand for orders and difficulties in attracting financing from external investors. Meanwhile, the UGT union warns that Glovo has toughened the working conditions of those employees who remain, eliminating various wage supplements provided for in the current collective agreement (work on public holidays, clothing).
Last January 2023, Glovo announced another staff cut of 250 people, which affected staff workers at its Barcelona headquarters (Glovo-2023-ES)
