Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Danone, the French agri-food multinational, has announced the closure of the plant at its factory in Parets del Vallés, Barcelona, to workers representatives. A total of 157 workers are employed at this production plant and are set to lose their jobs.
The background of the closure, according to the company, is the downward trend in the consumption of dairy products and the need to rationalise costs.
The negotiating table with the unions will be formed next week, and according to the French multinational, the intention is to "promote the reindustrialisation" of the factory to minimise the impact of the measure. One of the available options includes the sale of the factory to a third party.
The unions have rejected the measure and urge the company to negotiate an industrial plan with staff representatives to guarantee the continuity of activity and jobs at the plant.
