Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Royal FrieslandCampina, an internationally operating dairy company from the Netherlands, has announced an internal restructuring which will lead to 900 jobs being cut in the Netherlands.
The jobs lost are part of a worldwide internal restructuring in which approximately 1800 jobs will be lost. This restructuring plan is an attempt to reduce costs, as profit margins in the dairy industry are limited and competition is fierce. The jobs that will be cut mostly consist of office jobs in HR, finance, IT, marketing, and Research & Development.
Trade Union CNV has made agreements with FrieslandCampina for financial compensation and good guidance towards other work for the workers being let go. FrieslandCampina's profit fell to 8 million euros, and the company sees this internal restructuring as a necessary way to keep their competitive market position worldwide.
FrieslandCampina is a cooperative dairy company with which 75% of all Dutch dairy farmers are associated. The worldwide restructuring programme has been recorded in the ERM events database under FrieslandCampina-WO-2023.
