Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 12 December 2023, the German automotive supplier ZF will be closing its plant in Gelsenkirchen by the end of 2024, which will result in the loss of approximately 200 employees.
The plant which almost faced a closure already in 2018 has not been profitable and was not able to gain any orders for its future product electric power steering for lorries. Workers’ representatives criticise the closure and emphasise that this move is a decision by management against ZF’s sites in Germany. Works council and management have started negotiations on a social plan and intend to find good solutions for affected employees.
ZF has approximately 53,000 employees in Germany.
