Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
ArcelorMittal España, a steel manufacturer, has proposed the dismissal of 440 employees in Spain by means of an agreed employment redundancy file (ERE).
Specifically, the company has proposed the dismissal of 440 of its employees in Spain born between 1962 and 1963, without applying the relief contract. Until now, the relief contract, in force for twenty years, allowed the early retirement of staff aged 61 and the entry of temporary workers to fill their posts and maintain the workforce.
The company has linked this decision to the investments it will have to make in order to start up the hybrid electric furnace in Gijón, linked to its decarbonisation process. Meanwhile, the reaction of the trade union representatives has been of total rejection of the initiative, assessing the number of redundancies proposed as "disproportionate".
