Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Swedish truck and car manufacturer Volvo has announced that they will be laying off 400 temporary agency workers at their truck-manufacturing factory in Umeå, Västernorrland. The reason given by the company is that it will reduce shifts from four to two starting 2024. According to the company, no company employees will be affected at this stage.
These layoffs come as a continuation of layoffs at the Volvo Car’s factory back in Volvo Cars 2023 - SwedenMay, and are expected to start immediately.
Volvo Trucks currently employs 77 employees at their factory in Umeå, whilst the Volvo Group employs 95,000 employees globally.
