Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The glass packaging manufacturer Vidrala has announced that it will close one of three furnaces at its manufacturing plant in Llodio, Alava, Basque Country, leading to the loss of 80 jobs.
This furnace was classified as non-competitive and its closure has been accelerated by a weakness in demand and rising costs, especially energy costs. The measure will affect a total of 80 workers, namely 25% of the total jobs at the Llodio manufacturing plant, 320 workers. Vidrala has communicated the adjustment to the trade unions and will negotiate these departures through non-traumatic measures, such as voluntary redundancies.
Vidrala has manufacturing plants in Spain, Portugal, Italy and United Kingdom.
