Description
The Lecta group, leader manufacturer of paper products, has presented a plan to shut down a coated paper production line, threatening 186 jobs out of a total workforce of 420.
In recent months, the plant has experienced several alternating periods of short-time working and resumption of activity. The significant decline in the paper market as well as the recent rise in energy prices partly explains the difficulties encountered.
Production was halted in September due to a strike called by the unions. Employees fear that the plant will eventually close altogether. Sophie Binet, general secretary of the CGT and François Hommeril, general secretary of the CFE-CGC were received on 11 September by the Minister for the Economy, Bruno Lemaire, and Roland Lescure, the Minister for Industry, to ask the French government to look for another shareholder. Volumes of production suppressed at Condat are being transferred to other countries.
A former restructuring has been already recorded in the ERM Database, with 104 job cuts in 2007 Condat 2007 - FR.
Updated, 25 February 2026:
On the 10 of October 2023, the CGT, FO, and the CFE-CGC trade unions have signed the Lecta Group's social plan. Of the initial 186 job cuts, 174 cuts will take place in November. According to a CGT representative, social partners signed the plan to avoid a unilateral approach by the management and to secure benefits for those made redundant or retiring early.
The plan offered €6,000 with a €400 bonus per year of experience in the company. For those aiming to create a company or a micro company, the enterprise will offer €15,000 or €10,000, respectively. However, following the plan, fifteen employees took the company to court in Périgueux, demanding compensation on the grounds that the legal procedure for the job saving plan had not been followed.
Moreover, employees are protesting over the potential loss of a further 177 jobs, out of the 202 remaining positions at the site, which is currently in judicial liquidation. A trade union representative from the CGT stated that workers are already facing the likely consequences of the restructuring, with significant uncertainty regarding their future if the takeover offer is approved by the court.
