Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 13 November 2023, the Swedish tools manufacturer Epiroc announced plans to close its site in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. Around 200 employees are affected by the restructuring plan.
The company manufactures hydraulic attachment tools all over Europe and now wants to reorganise its production. Whilst the site in Essen will be closed by the end of 2025, production will be shifted to other sites in Sweden, more specifically Kalmar and Fagersta, and Germany, to Dermbach. Whilst the company stated that around 130 employees will lose their jobs, news reports also stated that a further 70 employees will be offered new jobs in other parts of the company.
