Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Marelli Group has announced the closure of the Marelli Automotive Lighting France plant at Saint-Julien-du-Sault (Yonne) and the subsequent loss of 125 jobs.
The plant, which is specialised in the manufacture of rear lights for vehicles, has been facing 'a significant drop in short and medium-term orders and very low production forecasts' for years, according to management. The plant 'has only worked at 30% of its capacity' and is reporting 'a significant operating loss of more than €24 million between 2018 and 2022'.
The initial outline of the job-safeguard plan was sent to employees at the extraordinary Social and Economic Committee (CSE) meeting. Employees went on strike while waiting to hear about the Group's proposed job-safeguard plan. Consultation with the CSE will continue until the beginning of the first quarter of 2024. The majority of job cuts will take place thereafter.
