The German furniture manufacturer Maja Möbelwerke has announced the elimination of 450 jobs at its plant in Wittichenau.
The reason for the job cuts is the closure of the plant in Wittichenau by the end of 2023. This affects 450 employees, for whom a quick solution is to be found in cooperation with the works council. The management justified the closure with the fact that at the end of the year an important major customer had terminated the cooperation until the end of 2023. For 30 years, Maja Möbelwerke had produced exclusively for the Swedish furniture company Ikea. According to the company, the order volume had recently been reduced from six million to currently 1.5 million pieces of furniture.
IG Metall is campaigning for the preservation of the Maja furniture factories in Wittichenau. Uwe Garbe, First Authorised Representative of IG Metall East Saxony, said on Friday that the colleagues must be given a future perspective at the site. The union had always warned against concentrating production on just one major customer.
The company had already laid off about 200 employees in January because of the tight financial situation Maja Möbelwerke - 2023.
