Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sartorius, a pharmaceutical and laboratory equipment supplier headquartered in Goettingen (Germany), has informed that 259 jobs have been cut at its Goettingen site. On the occasion of the presentation of its half-year figures on July 21th 2023 Sartorius announced that 259 of the 4,424 employees in Goettingen have been laid off since the beginning of the year. Worldwide, 900 of the previous 16,000 jobs have been affected by job cuts since the beginning of the year. Sartorius had significantly increased its workforce during the Corona pandemic due to the sharp rise in demand, and now has to reduce its workforce due to the decline in demand. Sartorius employs more than 15,000 people at over 60 locations worldwide and generated annual sales revenue of €4.71 billion in 2022.
