Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Arlanxeo, a producer of chemical products and part of the Aramco group has announced closure of its facility in Zwijndrecht producing butyl rubber and 278 jobs will be lost. The company management has stated that the main reasoning behind the closure is the competition that the facility has had to face for a long time. Despite additional investments and other support measures, the facility remains unable due to oversupply in the market and high production costs. Production will be taken over by facilities of Arlanxeo in Canada and Singapore.
Trade unions have reacted that the situation has become increasingly desperate over time, especially after increasing energy costs.
