Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The French subsidiary of the Japanese group Fast Retailing France, which owns the Uniqlo brand, has announced the closure of 55 shops and the loss of 304 jobs in France. The reorganisation was announced to staff representatives on 23 May. The group plans to close 28 outlets of the Comptoir des Cotonniers women's clothing chain out of the 67 currently operating in France, and cut 101 jobs out of 272 permanent positions. For lingerie retailer Princesse Tam-Tam, the group is planning to close 27 out of 69 outlets and cut 84 jobs out of 235 permanent positions. In addition, 119 jobs will be lost at Fast Retailing France head office. The shops concerned should all be closed by August 2024, but the job losses will be spread over a slightly longer period to support the employees affected.
