Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Competence Call Center (CCC), which controls the contents of the social network Facebook, has reached a pre-agreement with the company employees' committee to offer up to 250 paid redundancies within the company’s adjustment plan. It is worth stressing that the company is currently under a temporary lay-off process (ERTE) affecting 680 people. According to the unions. It is quite possible that these 250 redundancies will be covered on a voluntary basis, so the number of people affected by the temporary lay-off process (680 people) would be reduced.
The proposal agreed by the company and the unions foresees severance payments of 23 days per year worked. This adjustment process comes after the company was sanctioned by the Labour inspection for failing to comply with the law on the prevention of psycho-social risks.
A global restructuring plan has been announced for Facebook's parent company, Meta, in the ERM database. In 2022 the company announced 11,000 job cuts (Meta-2022-WO), and in 2023 an additional 10,000 job cuts (Meta-2023-WO).
