Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Talum, the manufacturer of aluminium products, announced the complete closure of the primary aluminium production and the layoff of 189 workers.
The management said the primary aluminium production is no longer sustainable due to the energy crisis. After the reduced production since autumn 2022, Talum has decided to close it. The company defends its decision by citing high energy prices and late state aid.
The company negotiates collective layoff terms with the company trade union. According to the trade union representative, 189 workers are redundant. While the employment of 120 workers will be terminated through soft methods, the trade union is attempting to attain the re-employment of 69 workers.
The company currently employs 1500 workers.
