A&E Europe, a threads manufacturer in Maribor and part of the US-based global group Elevate Textiles, informed the worker organisations about the gradual closure of the plant and invited them to negotiate on the termination of employment contracts of 103 employees.
Management explained the planned targets for 2021 were not achieved due to market conditions and strategies of business partners, but also the long-term impact of the pandemic, problems in supply chains, and inflation. The closure will occur in two phases, one in spring and the other in summer. Management hopes the prolonged employment termination period will give workers more chances to find new jobs.
At the end of 2020, employees organised a strike warning due to a wage dispute, then went on strike in mid-January 2021, claiming the wages are unproportionate compared to company profits. In March 2022, they succeeded to obtain the first collective agreement in the company's history and improve their wages.
