Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The FCA Powertrain Poland plant in Bielsko-Biała, which produces automotive engines, has announced it will lay-off 300 of its 800 employees. Talks with trade unions concerning the collective dismissals process will commence on 25 February 2023, and the whole restructuring process is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.
The company's management has stated that this announcement comes after the European Commission's introduction of regulations on combustion engine emissions, which has led to a decline in orders for engines, and consequencially FCA Powertrain Poland's decision to end production of internal combustion engines. The company will hold talks with the trade union, during which the employer's proposals on the restructuration will be discussed. The possibility of some of the laid-off workers moving to the Stellantis plant in Tychy or Gliwice will be considered, but the number of redundancies is firm.FCA is part of the Stellantis group, a multinational automotive manufacturing corporation formed in 2021.
