Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 14 February 2023, the US-based car manufacturer Ford will be implementing a job reduction programme for its European subsidiary Ford Europe which will result in the loss of 2300 jobs in Germany until the end of 2025. The job reduction is part of a large-scale reduction in Europe which will affect 3800 employees, equivalent to 11% of Ford’s entire European workforce. Ford Europe will be cutting 1700 jobs in car development and 600 jobs in administration. Mainly affected will be Ford Europe’s plants in Cologne and Aachen. Ford Europe will waive occupational terminations and will offer affected employees severance and early-retirement programmes. Remaining employees in Cologne will have a job security until 2032, which was negotiated by the works’ council.
Ford Europe has currently 19,000 employees in Germany.
