Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mercedes-Benz, a German luxury and commercial vehicle automotive brand, announced that it will cut 380 jobs at their Customer Assistance Centre located in Maastricht. The activities will be relocated to Greece, considering the shortage on the Dutch labour market and the fact that the wages are lower in Greece. The dismissals concern 240 people with a permanent contract and 140 people with a temporary contract. All jobs are reported to be cut by direct dismissal. Trade unions were surprised that they had not been informed first. Trade union FNV has urged people not to sign a severance agreement, as they plan to talk to Mercedes-Benz about a redundancy plan. Trade union CNV has similarly advised people not to sign anything.
Mercedes-Benz is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, and employs over 173,000 people world-wide.
