Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Dell Technologies has announced a global restructuring plan which will reduce its workforce by approximately 5% (6,600 workers). Dell has not announced which locations will be most impacted, however, it is expected that the offices in USA and Ireland will experience job cuts. The CEO has stated employees should expect to see restructuring in regional sales and Dell Tech Select teams, support services teams and 'ISG' engineering teams. In the public SEC filing there has been no statement on the restructuring process for employees or the role of social partners.
The last restructuring event recording job loss in the Database for Dell was in 2009. The company announced a restructuring in Ireland which involved the offshoring of manufacturing from Limerick to Poland (Dell-2022-IE). In this case, the Irish authorities applied for aid from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).
