Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Due to bankruptcy at Crown Van Gelder, a Dutch paper manufacturer located in Velsen-Noord, North-Holland, 200-250 employees will lose their jobs. The company can no longer afford the increased costs of the raw materials and energy, this together with the uncertain market developments and decline in orders have led the company to go bankrupt. All employees will be directly dismissed. It is not the first time that the company has gone through bankruptcy, during the economic crisis in the early eighties, the Van Gelder company already went under, only to make a new start shortly afterwards under the name Crown Van Gelder in a slimmed-down form.
