Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on 10 January 2023, the German hospital Paracelsus Klinik Bad Ems will be shutting down parts of its hospital operations by 31 March 2023 which will result in the loss of 270 jobs. Affected units will be inpatient care and the emergency room. According to clinic management, the hospital has not been able to recover after the pandemic to a level which would ensure a long-term care stability. Additionally, the hospital is facing a staff shortage and in particular a shortage in skilled workers which has created unsustainable operational pressure.
As of today, it is unclear what the restructuring plan will entail for the 270 employees. Employee representatives and clinic management have begun talks on a 'social plan', however, The United Services Union (Verdi) is demanding alternative solutions for patients and employees. 'The Verdi union called on local politicians to quickly find alternative solutions for patients and employees. "The developments in Bad Ems should also be a strong warning signal for the city of Koblenz and the Mayen-Koblenz district in connection with the negotiations on the privatization of the Mittelrhein community clinic, the largest maximum care provider in the region," said union secretary Tobias Zejewski.'.
