Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
MVM, a state-owned energy company, expands its customer service personnel by 30%, creating 400 new jobs. Both in-person customer services and call centres are involved in the expansion. The personnel will be enlarged in a three-phase process by the end of February 2023. The newly hired workforce will undergo a weeks-long training programme.
MVM holds a key position regarding both electricity and gas provision. The workload of customer services increased drastically in the second half of this year, due to the surging energy costs for business customers and the partial lifting of the energy price cap for many retail customers. The existing customer service system was unable to handle the surge in inquiries.
At the same time, the existing MVM employees say they are highly dissatisfied due to the unwillingness of the firm to renegotiate the existing wage agreement, despite the record-high inflation that made the existing agreement unsustainable. In November, the company trade union said they were ready to do anything to press their demands.
