Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The well-known regional daily "La Voix du Nord" has confirmed the preparation of a plan to cut around 100 jobs out of a total workforce of 598. The new plan details approximately 100 job cuts, including 70 among journalists and the partial closure of departments such as advertising and general services. Almost all editorial departments are affected. There would also be a reorganisation of the local editorial offices, which would be reduced from 17 to 13. The management also wants to outsource some of the local editorial tasks with the creation of a 'press agency'.
For several months now, management and unions have been holding secret discussions to improve the newspaper's competitiveness. The latter had already carried out a reorganisation in 2017 which led to the loss of 132 jobs (out of the 178 job losses envisaged) out of a total workforce of 710 employees (FR-La-Voix-du-Nord-2017). The group's trade unions denounced 'a social plan of unprecedented violence' at the regional daily owned by the Belgian press group Rossel. The project will be presented to staff representatives on 13 December 2022. The management cite the impact of the economic crisis, the rapid rise in energy and paper costs as key factors.
