Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Royal IHC is a Dutch shipbuilding company, located in South-Holland. They announced the dismissal 250 employees as a result of a major internal restructuring. They are not receiving enough large orders and can no longer afford to employ the same number of employees. Additionally, the company is now facing competition from Asia. With a voluntary severance package, they hope to keep forced dismissals at a minimum.
This is not the first time the company has encountered problems. In 2020, Royal IHC was saved from bankruptcy, and in 2021 around 1,000 jobs were cut worldwide. Moreover, later this year, one of the company’s two locations, Krimpen aan den IJssel, will be temporarily closed. The company is currently hoping for future orders from the Dutch Ministry of Defense.
Royal IHC currently employs 2,500 people in the Netheralands. A previous announcement was recorded in the ERM database in November 2020, with 300 job cuts (Royal IHC-2020-NL).
