Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
US healthcare company Abbott Laboratories will create 1,000 new jobs at a new greenfield manufacturing plant in Kilkenny as well as at its existing plant in Donegal. The company plans to invest €440 million in the two plants. The reason behind the expansion and the job creation is to increase production of the 'FreeStyle Libre' technology for people with diabetes. IDA Ireland supports the investment.
The company started its operations in Ireland in 1946 and currently employs 5,000 people at facilities in Donegal, Tipperary, Dublin, Longford, Sligo and Galway.
Previous business expansion was recorded in the ERM database in 2018, with 500 jobs created (Abbott Ireland-2018-IE).
